A side note: while I was taking these pictures, I noticed the bees in the doorway were doing something weird. They were rocking back and forth and seemed to be licking the wood. The other bees came and went but these ones stayed put. If you look closely at the photos, some of the bees have their tongues out. I did a little research and discovered that this activity is called
"washboarding" and is primarily done by adolescent bees. It was very strange but I'm glad to know it is normal.
